Zoho interviewers read your code. Clean variable names, proper indentation, and no hardcoding matters. A correct but messy solution scores lower than a clean, slightly-optimised solution. Practice writing production-quality code, not competitive-programming shortcuts.

Real Questions Asked at Zoho

Written Test — Strings

Given a sentence, reverse each word individually without reversing the order of words. E.g., "Hello World" → "olleH dlroW". Implement without using split/join built-ins.

Written Test — Matrix

Print a matrix in spiral order. Then: "Now do it in-place for a square matrix." Implement both. Time complexity must be O(n²).

Written Test — Linked List

Merge two sorted linked lists into one sorted linked list. Then: "What if you have K sorted lists?" Explain the approach for K lists without necessarily implementing it.

Technical Round — Arrays

Find all pairs in an array that sum to a given target. Then: "What if duplicates are allowed?" Then: "What if the array is sorted — can you do better?" Walk through all three variants with complexity analysis.

Technical Round — Trees

Find the lowest common ancestor (LCA) of two nodes in a binary tree (not BST). The interviewer then asked: "What if you need LCA for multiple pairs on the same tree — how do you optimise?"

Technical Round — OOP

Design a Library Management System with classes for Book, Member, and Loan. Implement borrow() and return() methods with proper OOP principles. Be ready to discuss inheritance vs composition choices.

Technical Round — Database

Given a table orders(order_id, customer_id, amount, date), write a query to find customers who placed orders on every day of the last 30 days. (Tests window functions and date arithmetic.)

Senior Technical Round — Design

"How would you design Zoho CRM's contact search feature to support full-text search across 10M+ contacts with sub-100ms latency?" Discuss indexing strategy, search architecture, and trade-offs.

Yes. Zoho's hiring philosophy explicitly values ability over pedigree. Their "Zoho Schools" programme hires students with no formal college degree from rural India. For lateral hires, your GitHub profile, project work, and coding performance matter far more than your college name or branch.
Which programming language should I use for the Zoho coding test?
Java is strongly recommended. Zoho's entire core product suite is Java-based, and interviewers respond positively when you demonstrate Java fluency — especially Collections and OOP. C++ is acceptable but Java is the clear favourite. Python is allowed but may be perceived as less aligned with Zoho's stack.
Is system design asked for 2–3 year experienced candidates?
At basic level — more "how would you design the database schema for this feature?" than distributed systems design. Full HLD/LLD system design is expected only for 4+ year candidates. For junior laterals, focus on OOP design (class diagrams, method design) rather than distributed architecture.
How long does the Zoho hiring process take?
Typically 2–4 weeks for campus drives (all rounds in 1–2 days). Lateral hiring usually takes 3–5 weeks from OA to offer. Background verification is done post-offer and can take 2–3 additional weeks before the joining date is finalised.
Can I negotiate salary at Zoho?
Zoho has structured salary bands with limited flexibility compared to funded companies. You can negotiate up to 15–20% for lateral roles by presenting a competing offer or market benchmarks. Freshers have almost no negotiation room. For senior roles (5+ years), there's more flexibility since Zoho wants to retain senior talent.
Is Zoho a good company to switch to from TCS/Infosys?
Yes — especially as a career stepping stone. Zoho gives you genuine product engineering exposure (you own features, fix real bugs, work with actual users) which is rare in service companies.
