The Interview Process

StageFormatWhat's Tested
Online Coding AssessmentHackerRank, 60–90 min1–2 coding problems — arrays, strings, basic algorithms
Recorded Competency InterviewAI-led video, no live interviewer~5 pre-recorded behavioral questions, a few minutes to record each response
Technical InterviewLive video, 45–60 min, 1–2 roundsCoding, CS fundamentals, past project deep-dive
Behavioral/Panel InterviewStructured, sometimes 2–3 interviewersIBM's THINK competency framework — STAR-format stories on collaboration, innovation, learning agility, client impact
The AI-Led Recorded Round Is Real — Prepare for It Specifically Many candidates are caught off guard by recording behavioral answers to a screen with no human reacting in real time. Practice answering out loud to a camera beforehand — the absence of natural back-and-forth conversation cues (nodding, follow-up prompts) changes how you should pace and structure your answers compared to a live interview.

Band Structure & Salary

BandTypical LevelIndia CTC Range
Band 6Entry-level Software Engineer₹17–24L
Band 7–8Software Engineer / Senior Engineer₹24–40L
Band 9–10Staff Engineer / Senior Technical roles₹40–58L+

IBM's bands generally run somewhat below top-tier product companies and GCCs at comparable seniority, though they remain competitive with mid-tier IT services and many GCCs, especially given the relative job stability IBM offers.

Understanding IBM's THINK Competency Framework

IBM evaluates behavioral responses against named competencies rather than open-ended impressions. Prepare distinct STAR stories mapped to each:

  • Collaboration — a time you worked effectively across teams or with difficult stakeholders
  • Innovation — a time you proposed or implemented a non-obvious solution
  • Learning agility — a time you picked up a new skill or technology quickly under pressure
  • Client impact — a time your technical work directly improved an outcome for an end user or client

Our STAR method guide covers how to structure these stories; for IBM specifically, explicitly naming which competency your story demonstrates at the start of your answer reads as well-prepared.

Technical Round Preparation

  • Standard DSA at easy-to-medium difficulty — arrays, strings, basic data structures
  • Core CS fundamentals — OOP, basic DBMS, sometimes networking basics depending on the team
  • Deep familiarity with your own past projects — IBM interviewers commonly probe project specifics in detail
  • For roles tied to IBM's cloud/AI platforms (watsonx, Red Hat OpenShift ecosystem), basic awareness of these platforms helps in the technical and hiring manager rounds
Highest-Leverage Prep Priorities 1. Practice the recorded AI interview format specifically — it's the most commonly underestimated stage. 2. Prepare 4 distinct THINK-framework STAR stories in advance. 3. Standard DSA practice at easy-medium difficulty is sufficient — don't over-invest here at the expense of behavioral prep.
