Two Very Different Engineering Tracks
| Track | What You Build | Interview Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Full-Stack / Application Engineering | Web platforms, internal tooling, cloud-facing products (Webex, security dashboards, etc.) | Standard DSA, OOP, system design — closer to a typical product company loop |
| Networking / Systems / Embedded | Layer 2/3 protocol development, packet processing (DPDK/P4), RTOS internals | Deep networking protocol knowledge, OS internals, memory management, IPC — a fundamentally different and more specialized bar |
Read the Job Description Carefully Before Prepping
"Software Engineer at Cisco" can mean two very different interview experiences depending on team. If the JD mentions routing protocols, DPDK, P4, or RTOS, you're being evaluated for the networking/systems track and generic DSA prep alone will leave significant gaps. If it's a full-stack/cloud role, standard product-company-style prep applies.
The Interview Process
| Stage | Format | What's Tested |
|---|---|---|
| Recruiter Screen | 45 min, telephonic | Background, role fit, logistics |
| Technical Interview (1–2 rounds) | Live, 45–60 min each | Past projects, OOPs, DSA, systems basics — depth varies sharply by track as above |
| Managerial / HR Round | 30–45 min | Communication, teamwork, cultural fit, evaluated against Cisco's stated principles |
Grade Structure & Salary
| Grade Range | Typical Level | India CTC |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 4–6 | Entry to early-career SDE | ₹17–28L |
| Grade 7–9 | Mid-level / Senior SDE | ₹28–55L |
| Grade 10–13 | Staff / Principal / Distinguished Engineer | ₹55L–1.4Cr+ |
If You're Targeting the Networking/Systems Track
- Layer 2/3 protocols — Ethernet switching fundamentals, IPv4/IPv6 routing concepts
- High-performance packet processing — DPDK or P4 familiarity is a strong differentiator for relevant roles
- RTOS and OS internals — memory management, inter-process communication, real-time scheduling concepts
- C/C++ at a systems level — this track leans much more on low-level language fluency than typical web-stack roles
Prep Priority for Full-Stack/App Roles
Standard DSA (arrays, strings, trees, graphs) plus OOP design fundamentals and basic system design covers most of what's tested. Treat the managerial/HR round seriously — it's a genuine evaluation stage, not a formality, with explicit cultural-fit criteria.
